Black iron oxide powder (Fe₃O₄) is used in lapidary work as a tinting agent for clear epoxy resin (such as Epoxy 330) when assembling gemstone doublets, particularly opal doublets. Adding a small amount of the black powder darkens the adhesive layer, creating a high-contrast dark background that dramatically enhances the play-of-color and fire in thin crystal or transparent opal slices
